Discover South Georgia College
Founded in 1906, South Georgia College sits on 190 acres in the rural
southeast Georgia town of Douglas. The College has a long and distinguished
tradition of service to the people of the community and remains focused on a
core of strong teaching and personalized academic advising. Founded as the
Eleventh District Agriculture and Mechanical School, South Georgia College
became the first state-supported two-year college in Georgia In 1927and four
years later emerged as one of the original institutions of the University
System of Georgia. Over a century later, SGC is still growing and evolving
as it transitions into one of the newest state colleges in the University
System of Georgia.
As a four-year residential institution, SGC provides accessible, high
quality, student-centered associate degrees and a limited number of
baccalaureate degree programs as well as state-of-the-art residential
facilities that enable the institution to draw students from other regions
of the state, neighboring states and foreign countries. By providing degree
and transfer opportunities in over 23 programs of study, students will be
prepared for a wide selection of careers, from education to nursing to
business.
With a new mission and vision in place, the College commits itself to
focusing on educational opportunities that will carry the students into the
next realm of learning experiences. By offering its first bachelor of
science in nursing degree as early as fall 2012, SGC positions itself to be
a leader in the area for developing health care professionals with strong
leadership skills and the ability to deliver health care in a variety of
settings.
Outside of class, students can participate in a wide range of activities,
cultural events and intercollegiate sports including swimming, baseball,
soccer, softball, golf and cross country. With over 20 campus clubs and
organizations, South Georgia College offers something for everyone and
encourages student involvement. The College also offers students the
opportunity to study abroad by taking approved courses fully transferrable
to your academic program while experiencing cultural and language learning
opportunities.
With a focus on student retention and graduation, South Georgia College
offers campus programs to encourage learning and to offer support when
needed. In addition to the dedicated faculty with a willingness to help in
all aspects of student life, a variety of support services are in place. The
Academic Support Center is an extension of the classroom and augments the
lessons learned during class. Open to all students, the ASC conducts
individual tutoring sessions as well as study sessions in the resident
halls. A disabilities coordinator and a counselor are both on hand to serve
